Yup, My art will be featured in the upcoming performance of MEDEA at the Knightsbridge Theatre in CA.
Medea was considered an outcast by her husbands (Jason of Jason and the Argonauts) people because they were "civilized" and she was a "barbarian". Jason was a decorated soldier, if you will, and basically the only reason he won any of his battles was because she was there to show him the way. Same old story - behind every good man is a great woman. She basically made him what he is, but he cannot climb the social ladder any longer with her by his side, so he trades in the starter wife for the king's daughter. Medea descends into depression and essentially madness (she wasn't really operating on a full deck anyway) but in this version of the play you never really know when she's having moments of sanity or moments of madness. Because we all know that hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. and a man can send any woman into a fit of rage, vengeance, lust or depression with a simple look.
Jason does love her and lusts for her, but his greed, pride and selfish nature has cast her out and committed her to a mental institution in order to get her out of the way so that he can climb the social ladder. Because her background and her race is keeping him from what he sees as success. Medea will be portrayed by an African American woman and as a schizophrenic. She hears voices and has hallucinations - most of which manifest themselves as the Greek chorus consisting of the other mental patients at the hospital but lead by three women who represent the maiden, the mother and the crone - the Greek chorus will be very tribal (rhythmic drums, dance and song) to represent her pagan and "barbarian" roots. Her life is fraught with confusion, devastation, vengeance, murder, lust, hate, love...you name it - she feels it. When she ultimately decides to kill her husband's new wife (and he father but only by accident) along with their children it is out of punishment for Jason, vengeance, but also out of love. basically some seriously intense emotions and some seriously disturbed shit.
The stage will be the inside of the mental institution with my art for the only color. Several images will be showcased!
